Described as acupuncture without needles, acupressure probably predates its better-known sister therapy. Finger and thumb pressure is applied to acupoints to relieve ailments and promote harmony and health. The treatment is delivered on a specially designed chair and is received through clothing.

AURICULAR ACUPUNCTURE

Five small needles are inserted in each ear into points which are identified as specific for treating problem drug use and aiding detoxification. The aim of the ‘5 point detox protocol’ is to relieve withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, induce general relaxation and enhance physical and mental well-being.
The ‘5 point detox protocol’ is not restricted to the treatment of opiate withdrawal. It is effective across the range of substances that people misuse including caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. HOMOEOPATHY

Homoeopathy is a system of medicine, which has been used around the world for the last 200 years. People are treated individually - a remedy is prescribed for the person as a whole, not just for their physical symptoms. In this way, homoeopathy can be effective for a wide range of symptoms and conditions. Homoeopathic remedies are made mainly from plants and minerals, and minute doses are used, which means that there are no toxic-side effects. Our experienced Homeopath is available to meet groups to provide advice and information. Individual consultations are available on a private basis only.

Therapies & Services #09HOPI EAR CANDLES

Thermo Auricular Therapy (also known as Hopi Ear Candles) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, used to treat a variety of conditions. This is an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilisations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, however, the practice reached the modern world via the native American Hopi Indians of North Arizona . The candles are made from the natural ingredients of beeswax, honey extracts, sage, St Johns Wort, chamomile, beta-carotene and organically grown flax. The candles work on a chimney principle, drawing any impurities to the surface where they can be gently removed. They equalise the pressure in the head and ears, making them suitable for most conditions. Secretion flow is gently stimulated and the vapour collects and removes impurities or deposits. Most clients find the whole experience very relaxing. Some fall asleep during treatment.

HOT STONE MASSAGE

Harnessing the properties of the volcanic basalt stones, the therapist bathes them in warm water and anoints them with spicy, sensual aromas of the Orient. Small stones are placed on key energy points on the body, evoling an aura of warmth, whilst the deep penetrating heat from the stones are used to massage the body using traditional techniques to release muscular tension and balance the spirit.

HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy induces a trance-like state during which the person is so deeply relaxed that the unconscious becomes accessible to suggestion. Hypnotherapy can therefore be used either to reduce or eliminate symptoms, or in psychological treatment, enable patient and therapist to access material hidden from the consciousness. The goal of hypnosis is to help people gain control over behaviour, emotions, disease, addictions and habits. Hypnosis is commonly used to treat anxiety and conditions, which have a strong psychological component such as addictions and irritable bowel syndrome.

Therapies & Services #10INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE

Indian Head Massage combines a blend of traditional Indian Massage techniques and the Ayervedic Healing System. The receiver benefits from improved circulation, joint mobility, muscle tone, relaxation and a feeling of peace and well being. Particular oils may be used to enhance the effect of the massage - this is optional.

KINESIOLOGY

Health Kinesiology communicates with your body using gentle muscle testing - applying light pressure to a muscle and monitoring how it responds. This response reveals exactly what procedure is ideal for the client. There are many techniques that may be used, such as the person thinking a precise thought; being placed in a specific body position; using magnets, crystals, colour, sound, etc. At the same time, acupuncture points are held to retune the energy and help maintain the body’s natural balance. No needles are involved.

PSYCHOTHERAPY & COUNSELLING

Many of us experience difficulties at some stage in our lives and at such times it is normal and healthy to seek help. Counselling or longer-term psychotherapy provides an opportunity for you to talk to someone who is trained to listen and respond to you in a supportive way. Your therapist will not advise you what to do, instead you will be encouraged to develop your awareness of your needs, thereby developing insight into your own difficulties, dilemmas and conflicts. This will enable you to identify and change what doesn’t feel right for you.

Therapies & Services #12REFLEXOLOGY

Foot massage has been practised for centuries. The science of Reflexology believes the feet and hands are a mirror of the body. Pressure placed on specific reflex points on them can be used to treat the corresponding areas of the body, in order to stimulate natural health powers and promote wellbeing. All parts of the foot are massaged, so that the body as a whole is treated. The receiver experiences a deep state of relaxation and well being. It does not tickle!! The therapy has become popular around the world and is often used in conjunction with aromatherapy.

REIKI

A form of Japanese spiritual healing, the word Reiki is derived from rei (universal) and ki (life energy). It has its foundations in ancient Tibetan Buddhism. A reiki session involves laying on of hands and leaves the receiver feeling relaxed and calm.

SHIATSU

Shiatsu massage was developed in Japan early in the 20th Century. Although influenced by Western Medicine, it has its basis in Traditional Chinese Medicine and follows the same principles of energy and meridians as acupressure. The practitioner uses fingers, thumbs, elbows, knees and even feet in a combination of massage techniques, applying pressure to key points to influence and stimulate energy flow in the body. This therapy is received on a futon mattress or chair, fully clothed.

SWEDISH/HOLISTIC MASSAGE

This is one of the oldest and simplest forms of complementary medicine and perhaps one of the most widely used today. Swedish massage tends to be the basis of most approaches to massage. It involves a number of manual techniques aimed to relax, strengthen and stimulate the muscles. Holistic massage is a term used for massage that addresses the whole person - most masseurs use this approach. Massage is applied to the muscles and ligaments, with the aim of relaxing the nervous system, improving circulation, stimulating the flow of oxygen-bearing red blood cells around the body and assisting the elimination of toxins.

Tutors are able to work with people of all abilities and ages.

ZERO BALANCING

Zero balancing is a gentle yet powerful hands-0n method of balancing body energy with body structure. Using finger pressure and held stretches it invites the release of tension accumulated in the bones and deep joints of the skeleton.Zero Balancing can help to reduce pain and improve posture and flexibility in the body.It is an effective way of dealing with accumulated stress in the body and mind. People feel relaxed and refreshed after a session, more able to understand and deal with the cause of their stress.

    Therapies & Services #20PEER MASSAGE

‘Touch is critical for childrens’ growth, development and health, as well as adults’ physical health and wellbeing’
Dr Tiffany Fields of the Touch Research Institute of Miami School of Medicine

The Massage in Schools Programme was introduced to the UK in December 1999 and is now being used in schools throughout the country.
    The clothed massage is:

  • for children aged 4 – 12 years old

  • given by children, to each other

  • on the back, head, arms and hands

  • given and received with the child’s permission

  • 10 – 15 minutes daily

The massage is introduced to the children by the Instructor who has taken part in the Massage in Schools Programme training. The Instructor ensures that the class teacher and children are comfortable with the movements and routine and then visits every half term to check the progress of the class.

All children benefit although those who lack concentration and confidence and children who may be rather aggressive show the most change. In some schools the massage is used specifically with children who have special needs.

    The benefits:

  • Children become calmer

  • Improved concentration

  • More confidence

  • It helps children recognise ‘good’ and ‘bad’ touch

  • Better motor skills

  • Teaches respect of self and others

  • Reduction in bullying and aggression

  • The teacher benefits from a calmer classroom and improved concentration

  • Massage is fun!

    The curriculum
Massage can form part of the personal, health, social and citizenship education at KS1 and KS2 and may contribute to the Healthy Schools Award.

“After one half term, the class that was having the massage suddenly changed. They became much more settled and more aware of each others’ feelings. We saw a definite decrease in aggression and bullying.”
Viv Tombs, Head Teacher at Garden Primary School, Merton, South London.
